History and Legacy

The West London Aero Club’s home, White Waltham Airfield, has a rich heritage dating back to the early 20th century. The airfield was acquired by the famous de Havilland family in 1928, who established the de Havilland School of Flying in 1935. During World War II, the site was requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence and became the headquarters for the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) in 1940. The ATA played a crucial role in the war effort by ferrying aircraft to and from Royal Air Force stations—making over 309,000 aircraft movements during the war years, which allowed the RAF to focus exclusively on combat operations.

Post-war, White Waltham Airfield continued its aviation legacy as a flight test centre for manufacturers like Fairey Aviation, known for aircraft such as the Gannet and Rotodyne. Since the early post-war years, it has been the civilian home of the West London Aero Club, developing into one of Britain’s largest and best-known grass airfields set on 200 acres in the picturesque Berkshire countryside.

Facilities and Location

White Waltham Airfield is reputedly the largest grass airfield in the UK with three long runways that ensure there is almost always a runway aligned with the wind for safe flying. The airfield boasts ample parking and a historic clubhouse with a welcoming, easy-going atmosphere. This combination creates an ideal environment for both beginner pilots and more experienced aviators.

The facility’s location offers excellent accessibility, situated just three miles from the M4 motorway (junctions 8 and 9) and six miles from the M40 (junction 4). This strategic placement makes it quite convenient for residents of West London and beyond to access quality flying experiences without long travel.

Flying and Training Programs

The club is renowned for its flying training programs. Aspiring pilots can begin their flying journey here with introductory lessons guided by experienced instructors. The club features a wide choice of aircraft types tailored to various training and recreational flying needs.

Its long-standing reputation, supported by decades of training excellence inherited from the de Havilland School of Flying and the ATA legacy, makes it a highly respected flight school. The availability of knowledgeable instructors and a diverse fleet is a particular attraction for learners and enthusiasts looking to advance their flying skills in a friendly setting.

Community and Culture

The West London Aero Club prides itself on its community spirit. The historic clubhouse acts as a social hub where members and visitors can gather, share stories, and engage with the rich history of the airfield and British aviation.

The club also serves as a hub for aviation events and fly-ins, attracting enthusiasts and pilots from across the region. It fosters a culture of enthusiasm for flying, aviation history, and technical knowledge, reinforcing its position not just as a flying school but as a vibrant aero club.
