How Did the Fire Start and Spread Through the Takeaway?

As reported by London Fire Brigade in their official incident report, investigators believe the blaze was caused by cooking oil igniting in a commercial deep fat fryer before spreading into the extraction system, destroying the ducting, part of the ground floor, and half of the roof.

The fire broke out at 15:23 on Monday, June 15, 2026, with Control Officers taking the first of two calls and mobilising crews from multiple fire stations across the region.

Two of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders were deployed to help fight the fire from above, an unusual requirement that indicates the fire had reached significant height within the property. The fire was brought under control by 16:53, meaning firefighters contained the blaze in just over an hour.

Which Fire Stations Responded to the Hounslow Takeaway Blaze?

Crews from Heston, ealing/southall/">Southall, Heathrow, Ealing, Hayes, Hillingdon, and Kingston all attended the scene, representing eight fire engines in total.

This multi-station response demonstrates the serious nature of the incident, as the fire required significant resources to prevent it from spreading to the dwellings above the takeaway or neighbouring properties on the mid-terrace.

The London Fire Brigade confirmed that crews will remain on scene this evening to fully extinguish the fire, ensuring no residual heat could cause re-ignition.

Was Anyone Injured in the Great West Road Takeaway Fire?

London Fire Brigade officials have confirmed there are no reports of any injuries following the incident. This is particularly significant given that the property is a mid-terrace shop with dwellings above, meaning residents could have been at risk if the fire had spread more rapidly or if evacuation had not been timely.

A Twitter post from London Fire Brigade stated:

“The fire in #Hounslow is now under control. There are currently no reports of any injuries. Traffic remains heavily impacted, so avoid the area if you can. Crews will remain on scene this evening to fully extinguish the fire”.

What Damage Did the Fire Cause to the Takeaway Property?

The resulting fire caused extensive damage to the takeaway’s ground floor and roof, with investigators confirming that ducting in the extraction system was destroyed, part of the ground floor was damaged, and approximately half of the roof was destroyed by fire.

Around half of the roof was alight when crews arrived after the alarm was raised, indicating the fire had already spread significantly through the extraction system before firefighters arrived.

The damage to the extraction system’s ducting is particularly concerning, as kitchen extract ventilation systems draw grease-laden air directly from areas above cookers, grills, and fryers via the cooker hood, and grease deposits are easily ignited by even a small flash fire.

What Safety Warning Did London Fire Brigade Issue After the Fire?

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:

“We’d like to remind restaurant and takeaway owners to ensure they don’t have dirty ducting. If you don’t clean your extraction system regularly, you’re at a greater risk of ducting fires”.

The spokesperson continued:

“You should also make sure you keep the hob, cooker hood and extractor fan clean too – built up fat and grease can ignite and cause a fire”.

As reported by London Fire Brigade in their cooking safety advice following a similar fire at a shop with dwellings above on Commercial Road in Shadwell in January 2026, cooking should never be left unattended on the hob or grill, and if you have to leave the kitchen, you must turn off the heat.

The Brigade also advised that cooking with hot oil can be really dangerous, the risk increases when frying food more than once, and all it can take is becoming distracted for a few seconds before cooking oil quickly goes up in flames.

Additional safety tips from the London Fire Brigade include: never fill a pan more than one third full of fat or oil, make sure food is dry before putting it in hot oil as oil and water are a dangerous mix, and if oil starts to smoke it’s too hot so turn off the heat and leave it to cool.

The Brigade also advises using an electronic deep fat fryer if possible, as they have automatic temperature controls and are much safer.

Firefighters’ top tips for restaurants and takeaways, as published by London Fire Brigade following a restaurant fire in Petts Wood, include having ducting in your extraction system cleaned regularly, ensuring ducting is installed correctly, taking extra care when cooking with hot oil, never filling the pan more than one third full of fat or oil, making sure food is dry before putting it in hot oil, using an electronic deep fat fryer if possible, ensuring your electrical system is regularly tested, and completing your Fire Risk Assessment and making an emergency plan.

Why Are Extraction System Fires Particularly Dangerous in Commercial Kitchens?

As reported by Turek in Restaurant Online regarding Solly’s Restaurant in Golders Green, a kitchen extract ventilation system draws grease-laden air directly from the areas above cookers, grills and fryers via the cooker hood and discharges it into the atmosphere, and these grease deposits are easily ignited by even a small flash fire on or in the fryer, hob or grill, with flames and heat then quickly spreading through the building, causing substantial damage and endangering lives.

It is vital that grease and oil deposits are removed from within the extract system, as these deposits can form a hidden combustion load which may result in a major fire, according to CLEARDUCT Kitchen Extract Cleaning.

Cooking in commercial kitchens will over time generate grease deposits to the internal surfaces of the ventilation system, and if not removed, this will reduce airflow and greatly increase the risk of fire, as stated by Safeflow Vibration.

The B&ES TR19 Guide to Good Practice recommends regular specialist cleaning of kitchen extract systems based on usage, with cleaning cycles ranging from 6 months to 12 months depending on whether production is low, medium, or high.

Background: The Development and Context of This Fire Incident

This fire represents part of a continuing pattern of extraction system fires in London commercial kitchens. The London Fire Brigade has issued repeated warnings about grease-clogged extraction systems following similar incidents, including a Peckham takeaway fire in November 2021 caused by a grease-clogged extractor fan, a Petts Wood restaurant fire in 2025 believed to have started in the extraction system from grease and fat deposits, and a Norbury takeaway fire in April 2023 that evacuated 26 people living in flats above the premises.

The Shadwell mixed-use building fire in January 2026, which was also caused by ignition of oil in a deep fat fryer at a shop with dwellings above on Commercial Road, prompted the Brigade to issue identical cooking safety advice.

The 2009 Solly’s Restaurant fire in Golders Green resulted in nine breaches of the Regulatory Reform Order, with the restaurant fined £3.3k and owner Linda Sade fined £750.

North London has experienced several significant takeaway fires, including a November 2024 blaze on Seven Sisters Road in Holloway that required 100 firefighters over four hours, devastated the ground-floor restaurant resulting in roof collapse, and left five individuals requiring hospital admission for smoke inhalation.

Prediction: How This Development Will Affect Takeaway Owners and Hounslow Residents

This development will significantly affect takeaway owners across London by increasing scrutiny on extraction system maintenance and potentially leading to stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations. Takeaway owners will face increased pressure to invest in regular professional ducting cleaning services, with the B&ES TR19 Guide recommending cleaning cycles as frequently as every 2-3 months for high-usage commercial kitchens.

This will likely increase operating costs for small takeaway businesses, particularly those that have previously neglected regular extraction system maintenance.

The fire will affect Hounslow residents living near Great West Road through continued traffic disruptions as crews remain on scene to fully extinguish the fire, with the London Fire Brigade explicitly advising drivers to avoid the area.

Residents in the mid-terrace property with dwellings above will face temporary displacement while damage assessments are completed and repairs to the half-destroyed roof are undertaken.

Takeaway owners across the UK will likely experience increased insurance premiums following this incident, as extraction system fires represent a significant commercial risk.

The incident reinforces the mandatory requirement for all businesses to complete Fire Risk Assessments under the Fire Safety Order, with previous violations resulting in substantial fines as demonstrated by the Solly’s Restaurant case.

The development will affect restaurant and takeaway customers through potential temporary closures of neighbouring establishments as fire safety inspections increase across the borough.
